Security Industry Professional Programme

Introduction
Our security industry professional programme delivers broad insurance cover and excellent service at competitive premium terms.

"Your service is security," says Mary MacLaren of our Toronto office. "A faulty installation or an interruption in service can jeopardize the very property which your service is expected to protect. That's why you need to buy the very best liability insurance protection you can find, at a premium you can afford."

Our custom-designed policy wording has been developed to respond to the special needs of the security and protection industry. Cover includes the "failure to perform" risk, which most other carriers just can't cover.

We've been handling this class of business for over 20 years – longer than anyone else in the business.

Our programme reaches a wide range of security professionals, including:

  • Security guards

  • Specialty guard services, canine patrols and armed officers

  • Burglar alarm installers

  • Alarm central stations

  • Sprinkler and fire protection equipment installers

  • Private investigators

  • Armoured car services

  • Locksmiths

  • Bailiffs

  • Telephone answering and paging services

  • Cellular phone, industrial radio and communication equipment — manufacture, sales and service

  • Security equipment, including CCTV, intercom and access control systems, including export sales

  • Life and industrial safety equipment — manufacture, sales and service

  • Medical equipment, including medical gases, emergency, life-support equipment and supplies

Employee dishonesty coverage

Our optional Comprehensive Dishonesty, Disappearance and Destruction (3D) Policy provides broad cover for the acts of dishonest employees. This coverage may be vital if your employees visit or have access to your customers homes or business premises and you are able to supervise such employees only intermittently.

Of course, cover also applies to losses you may sustain directly as a result of employee dishonesty.

Employee dishonesty cover is not legal liability coverage. If the loss of property is attributable to your employee, the policy will pay regardless of legal liability. Your customer may recover his loss under the policy as if he were you. Employee dishonesty cover is a valuable sales tool and an excellent way to defuse a very difficult situation.

A standard sub-limit of $25,000 per loss (Form A) applies and higher limits are available on request.

Lost key coverage

This is an important feature for security guards and others who have custody of master-keys in order to patrol the building properly.

If master-keys assigned to the guard are lost or mislaid, the security to the entire building may be compromised. It may be necessary to re-cut the keys or in some cases to re-tool all the locks in the building.

Rather than quarrel about who is responsible for this expense, this feature of our policy picks up the expense on a "no-hassle" basis.

This feature of our policy applies both to security guards and any others whose service requires them to have custody of customers' keys. A standard sub-limit of $25,000 applies and higher limits are available on request.

Halon release coverage

This cover is a must for specialty fire protection companies. In the event that a halon or halon-substitute gas fire extinguishing system discharges accidentally, the cost of recharging the system is often $1,000 or more, depending on the size of the system. The lack of a satisfactory explanation for the discharge can cause great difficulty with the customer.

Again, rather than quarrel about who is responsible for the cost of recharging, this feature of our policy picks up the cover on a "no-hassle" basis. A standard sub-limit of $25,000 applies, and higher limits are available upon request.

Non-owned automobile liability cover

Non-owned auto cover provides protection for you whilst you or your employees are operating vehicles not owned by you.

The coverage is particularly important for security guards or others who are required to operate or move automobiles belonging to others whilst protecting clients premises. Cover includes your liability for any injury or harm caused whilst operating the automobile is insured, and collision damage to the automobile on an all-risks basis.

Workers' compensation or employers liability

The provincial workers compensation plan provides valuable benefits to employees who are injured on the job. Equally important from an employers point of view, workers' compensation also protects the business from lawsuits by injured workers.

Smaller companies may opt out from the workers' compensation plan but must make alternative arrangements to avoid lawsuits from injured workers. We recommend an employers liability extension to your CGL policy to fill in this important protection.

Waste management risks

Working on or near waste management sites such as waste dumps or storage depots presents unusual hazards. The Hagersville, Ontario tire fire showed us that even the most benign wastes materials can cause huge losses.

The standard CGL policy provides very reduced cover for work on or around waste management sites. Consider very carefully the risks of handling such work without suitable insurance.

Your broker may recommend a separate specialty policy to protect you for work on or near waste sites.

Environmental legislation in most provinces imposes very strict requirements for reporting spills or other escapes of pollutants. You need not be the owner of the pollutants to be held responsible for their escape. The penalties for failing to report a spill can be very high.

Make sure that your staff are aware of the simple steps they can take to protect you and your clients from prosecution under environmental regulations.

To Report A Loss To This Program
Our programme is designed expressly to meet the insurance needs of security professionals.

Because of the highly specialized nature of our coverage please report any claims, actions or suits directly to the nearest office of Underwriters Adjustment Bureau as soon as possible.

The reporting condition of the policy requires that you report to the insurer any incidents which might give rise to a claim, even though no such claim has yet been received.

Liability claims for this class of business may often follow months or years after the event itself. Failure to report an incident promptly may jeopardize the insurers investigation and defence of a subsequent legal action. To avoid the risk that individual losses may be denied as a result of late reporting, we would encourage you to report all such incidents promptly.
